Corn silo retrofit at brewery

brewery silo

A B.C. brewery was experiencing "hang-ups" and erratic flow of milled corn from a 15' (4.6 m) diameter silo with a conical hopper. Flow tests done on a representative sample corn indicated that mass flow hopper design was needed for first-in first-out flow. In the funnel flow hopper, the corn formed a stable "rat-hole" which gained in strength and reduced capacity of the bin.

The conical hopper was cut and a new transition hopper and "Moving Hole" feeder installed in November 1999. "Hang-ups" have been completely eliminated, allowing the brewery to maximize production.
