Retrofit of screenings silo at grain elevator

grain siloThe screenings silo at a grain elevator in Vancouver, Canada, originally had a 18 in. (460 mm) square outlet with a knife gate valve to discharge the contents of the bin. The screenings tended to sit in storage for an extended period of time, resulting in consolidation of the stored material and frequent "hang-ups". The "hang-ups" were severe and had to be cleared manually.

Initially, the plant tried a number methods to solve the flow problems, including an air driven silo cleaning device to remove build-up, air cannons to break a stable arch and epoxy lining of the bin walls. All of these proved ineffective.

An evaluation of the bin design showed that improvements were needed to the hopper first. A new hopper was installed inside the existing silo with a new "Moving Hole" feeder. The system was started up in 1988 and is the oldest "Moving Hole" feeder in operation. The "hang-ups" have been completely eliminated. The system has also been mechanically very reliable little maintenance work needed over the years.
