Fly ash storage/load out system provides trouble free service
When a BC pulp mill installed a new wood fired boiler, they wanted a state of the art ash handling system also to handle ash cleanly and efficiently without "hang-ups" in a large silo capable of holding several days storage. The 300 m³ silo was designed to load dry ash to rail cars or open containers, as well as ability to "condition" (wet) the ash during load out. The silo has been designed for mass flow to avoid stagnation in any part of the silo. A special loading deck with a collapsible rubber chute is lowered on to the top of the rail car to form an air-tight seal against the hatch when loading out dry ash. The rubber chute has an annular filter to handle displaced air as ash is loaded on to the rail car. The feeder also has a built-in conditioning system to wet the ash during load out if needed. The fly ash bin has provided reliable flow without any "hang-ups" since start-up in October 97. No maintenance work has been needed during this period.
