Simple feeder arrangement on new boiler effective on stringy bark

When the south-east U.S. pulp mill was shopping around for a new boiler, mill personnel paid particular attention to the fuel feed system. The mill had poor experience with feed system on an older boiler which consisted essentially of stokers and screws. The mill was also looking at having substantial fuel storage right next to the boiler to make the system less sensitive to problems in the rest of the fuel handling system.
The "Moving Hole" system with
a 3000 ft³ (45 minutes storage) met the above requirements and hence, was selected. The feed system consists of one bin and feeder with multiple discharge points. Feed into the bin is via a single conveyor. Fuel is discharged by the multiple slot feeder to a chute split several ways to provide equal amounts of fuel into each spout. There is no distribution equipment needed into or out of the bin.

The system was started up in October 1997, and is clearly out performing the older feed system. Fuel quality at the mill is generally poor and the fuel frequently hangs up in the older bin. In comparison, the "Moving Hole" feeder has maintained consistent fuel feed and has on occasions picked up the extra load when the older boiler has tripped because of interruption in fuel flow.
