Retrofit of feed system on wood fired boiler reduces supplementary fuel

Retrofit of fuel feedThe pulp mill previously had eight "star" feeders feeding to a wood fired boiler. The "star" feeders tended to plug up in the bin as well as the chutes below, and the mill was looking at making improvements in this area. Initially one feeder was installed on a test basis in December 1992, replacing one of eight star feeders. After evaluation for over a year, the mill made a decision to retrofit one boiler, replacing eight star feeders with six "Moving Hole" feeders. A second boiler was similarly rebuilt two years later.

The "Moving Hole" feeders have provided a much higher degree of reliability compared to the previous star feeders. Hog fuel consumption has gone up substantially with corresponding reduction in the supplemental fuel since the installation of the feeders. In addition to higher mechanical reliability, and elimination of hang-ups, the "Moving Hole" feeders provide a uniform steady discharge of hog fuel compared to the pulsating action of the star feeders which has improved fuel distribution and boiler efficiency.
